use your work to go to God
shocking how little work has to do with making money and everything to do with God. If you ever struggled with burnout and want to create meaning in your life, read this.
2 Disclaimer:
I will write about my business in this letter but it doesn’t matter whether you have a business or are employed. What I’m about to share applies to anyone who works (no matter the field).
I use God in my writing a lot. But I don’t see God as a person in the sky. God is the universe, nature, consciousness, soul, and our interconnectedness to all beings. So you can replace the word “God” with any word you like.
2 years ago I was an academic - I knew nothing about how to build a business. Nevermind a succesful one.
And to be frank, when I started my business my motivation was to “make money without being employed in a 9-5.” That was it. Oh how blind I was…
While that’s a good motivation, the more I do business the more I realize this path has very little to do with making money.
And I’m not just saying that to sound noble. I still get into the “I need to close this deal to make money” trap. But whenever I step behind this thought I realize how on the surface-level thinking that is.
It’s shallow, narrow, and self-consuming. The cause of a lot of our suffering.
Business (and life) is so much deeper than that.
And it took me a long time to realize this. I thought Business would be a great way to make money, but it ended up flipping my whole world upside down.
I started writing online 18 months ago and Heythem then and Heythem now are 2 completely different people.
I learned how to speak with confidence, defend my ideas, express my beliefs, be assertively loving, overcome the fear of being judged, control my emotions when I’m struggling, lead other people, negotiate contracts, solve problems, trust the process, and most importantly:
How to serve.
And that’s what we’ll talk about in this letter…
Business = Service
Your work/job/business, at its core, is about service. Serve wherever you can.
Your business should serve as a vehicle to serve the world. Because ultimately there’s nothing deeper than service.
Service is the essence of God (or the universe, however, you wanna call it). Service is at the forefront of every religious and spiritual text you will read.
When Ram Dass (the famous spiritual teacher) went to India he asked his guru Maharaj-ji:
“How can I become enlightened?”
Maharaj-ji said: “Love everybody, serve everybody, and remember God,” or “Feed people.” When he asked: “How can I know God?” Maharaj-ji said, “God is in all forms. God is in everything.”
These simple teachings, to love, serve, and remember, became the guideposts for his life.
What does that mean for your business?
Love everybody you come across in business - whether they are clients, coworkers, or competition. Care. Love. Connect.
Use your business to serve humanity and to make the world a better place. The highest purpose of a business is to solve problems and improve lives.
Remember you are doing God’s work and your business is a vehicle to be with him. When your work is an extension of your purpose, it becomes a spiritual practice. Every sale, every service, every interaction is a chance to be with God.
Everyone’s business should serve as a benefit to society, yourself, and the world. There’s a great quote that summarizes everything I want to write here:
“I slept and dreamt that life was joy.
I awoke and saw that life was service.
I acted and behold, service was joy.”
~ Rabindranath Tagore
Please read that one again. These 3 sentences give me goosebumps every time I read it.
Use your business to be with God.
Your aim should be to create something positive and meaningful for the world. Because if your business isn’t making the world a better place, there is no reason to start.
The ultimate reason for business is rooted in care, and spiritually there’s no difference between care and love.
Love, in turn, comes from God. So, in its truest sense, your business should be a vehicle to connect with God.
Understand that your business isn’t about you. It has nothing to do with you.
Your business is solely about the people you serve. Thats it.
When we think business is about money or status, we lose sight of its true purpose and burnout. Real business is about doing something for the greater good. Again, it’s about service.
In the words of Ram Dass:
“How you go about your work in the world determines whether your work is a vehicle for spiritual awakening or for getting more caught in the drama of separation. Do your work as an offering, out of love for God and you will live in unity, love, and bliss.”
When you focus on serving, there is no such thing as burnout or boundaries. You do it from a place of love and you wanna give it all away. That’s the essence of life.
When you build a business, focus on making it as beneficial as possible for everyone involved. Truly care - about your clients, your team, and anyone connected to your work.
The key to a meaningful business is staying close to God. When God is with you, you can create a business that has real, lasting impact.
That’s the ultimate goal: to be with God and make the world a better place.
God is everywhere
Your life is a curriculum for connecting with God, and your business should be used as a vehicle to get there.
Look for God in everything you do - in every deal you close, every challenge you face, and every relationship you build.
See God in your clients, in the people who support you, and in those who wronged you.
Feel His presence in the opportunities that come your way, in the dreams you pursue, and in the daily tasks of running your business.
God is everywhere in your business. We just need to open our eyes…
If you’ve read til the end, then we are speaking the same language. I’m aware that many people won’t relate to what I say but I honestly can’t see my work in any other way anymore. Life is about service. And that’s what I want to use my business for.
So if you’re aligned with my message and want to:
and attracts your tribe
makes people feel seen
build a writing business
builds the right audience for you
learn how to write content that connects with souls
reply to this e-mail with “Mentor” and I get back to you.
And just for you to know: This is a different kind of mentoring. I’ve added 60,000+ followers to my clients (you can have a look here), but the numbers are secondary. In my mentoring program, we use writing to get to know ourselves. To be a force in this world. To share what we truly believe in. To serve. If that resonates, I’m here.
Much love and talk soon. ❤️
