How my brother gained 38,000 Followers in 8 months

In September last year, my brother came to me and asked about online writing.

“What’s a thread?”
“How do you do that?”
“How long does it take to grow?”
“How do you grow your following?”
“How do you know what’s good to post?”
“What’s the point of building an audience anyway?”

My brother had just wrapped up 10 years in academia (finished with a PhD in Data Science) and decided to step into the online world to try out this “online writing thing.”

Only problem:

He had no clue where to start. 

No experience in writing online whatsoever. He didn’t even know what a Thread was…

And that’s when I knew what I needed to do.

I used my brother as my little experiment 😅

Here’s someone with zero social media experience.

And I teach people how to write and build a brand on Threads with writing, so I thought:

If my system really works, I should be able to grow my brother’s following FAST.

So I taught him everything:

• How to find viral topics to write about

• How to write content that gets people's attention

• My Viral Hook Structures that make me go viral constantly

• And much more (I'll break it all down in a bit)

Result:

In the first 14 days, my brother gained 1,200+ followers.

I mean, I got results for my clients, but seeing my brother grow at the rate he grew meant so much to me.

Here are the exact steps we took:

1. Replace academic writing with online writing

My brother spent 10 years in the academic world - while that’s great for credibility, it’s no good for viral online writing. 

Academic writing is long, complicated, emotionless, and boring.

But online writing should be simple, trigger emotions, and be exciting to read. So, learn the Online Writing rules.

In summary, here’s what I do to get the attention of the reader:

• Remove adverbs

• Shred my writing by 20%

• Read out loud what I wrote

• Replace complicated words with simple ones

• Insert statistics, numbers, bulleted lists, and pictures

• Remove unnecessary words (really, that, very, there)

2. Use the 3-sentence Viral Hook Structure

I’ve spent 100+ hours studying viral hooks. And here’s the hook structure that I see go viral repeatedly:

1. Sentence - Credibility: degrees, Age, past experience, transformations, work experiences. difficulties you have faced

2. Sentence - Impactful Statement: Controversial statements, Topic not often talked about, A reliable pain to the audience, Making people aware of a big problem, New Idea/ new way of looking at a topic

3. Sentence: Call to read further: Here’s proof, Here’s how/ Here’s why, Here’s the X-step system to.., Here's the scientific blueprint, Here are 5 science-backed hacks, Here’s the sad truth (and how to fix it),Here are X brutal/controversial/eye-opening truths

3. High-Value Content

Most content on Threads is fluff, dull, and useless. 

We focused on writing posts that:

• show his expertise (PhD in Data Science)

• his personal transformations (weight loss)

• provide a ton of value for his audience (scientific lifestyle tips)

People started to thank him in the comments and share his posts.

And if you don’t have any expertise yet but still want to produce high-value content?

The #1 Rule is: The higher-quality content you consume, the higher the quality your Threads will be.

That means you should:

• Save your favorite posts on Threads/X/Instagram

• Subscribe to a blog/newsletter in your niche

• Watch Viral videos on YouTube in your niche

• Read high-performing articles on Medium

• Read the best book summaries on Blinkist

• Read upvoted answers on Quora

• Listen to podcasts in your niche

• Read books in your niche

Repurpose, reframe, and add to it. That's how creation works. If you do that, you'll create high-value content that people actually want to read.

4. Engagement Group + Community

5. Focus on Long-Form Threads

Long-form threads make you grow quickly.

Unlike short-form posts, they require much more time investment from your audience. And the more attention and time investment the reader gives you, the more likely they are to follow you.

Plus, they also show your expertise and authority around the topic - if your Thread is well thought-out and performs well, you will gain the trust of the readers.

So if you can capture and keep people’s attention throughout the whole Thread, then:

• They will trust you

• They will remember you

• And they will follow you

My brother grows by 1000s of Followers overnight repeatedly, just by posting one long-form Thread.

6. Ask people to proofread

I read over everything my brother wrote (something I do for all my 1-1 clients).

At the beginning, his writing was hard to look at (that’s what 10 years of academia does to you).

But slowly over the months, I had less and less comments to make. I was truly amazed by how fast his writing and hook generation radically transformed.

Letting a fresh pair of eyes look over your content is gold - they spot mistakes you overlooked. To this day, I let others look over my content because I know there’s always something to improve.
