how I built a successful writing business

June 2023 I decided to try this “online writing thing”.

I started with blogging, fighting with the Google algorithm (big mistake )😅.

8 months later:

No money. No followers. No engagement. 🥲

But then everything changed when I went on social media (X and Threads).

14 months later:

• 38,000 followers on Threads and 4,300+ on X (formerly Twitter).

• A successful writing business that replaced my 9-5.

• A business I want to do for life.

All without spending no more than 30 minutes/day on social media, and only posting 2x per day.

Here’s what 14 months of posting on social media did for me:

• $60,000+ in revenue

• 2300+ e-mail subscribers

• 45,000+ Followers across platforms

Okay but now enough with the numbers. Cause that’s all secondary. Because:

Sharing my writing online healed me.

Writing exposed me to my flaws, fears, and insecurities. It’s through writing that I began to understand myself more.

I learned how to speak with confidence, defend my ideas, express my beliefs, be assertively loving, overcome the fear of being judged, control my emotions when I’m struggling, lead other people, negotiate contracts, solve problems, trust the process, and most importantly: How to serve.

Now I have a business I want to do for life. 

I spent my days reading, writing, and teaching how to write. So I’m basically getting paid to learn. It’s like getting paid to go to university.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about how fortunate, blessed, and lucky I am to get to do this.

I built a life I don’t need to escape from.

I do the same thing every day and I love it. When I wake up in the morning there’s nothing I’d rather do than write. Truly.

And that’s the life I want to help others to achieve.

So how exactly did I grow my writing business?

Well, I could tell you now about all the marketing strategies I learned, how to sell, how to please the algorithm, how to go after trends, blablabla…

But the truth is, this has little to do with why I’m able to make a living as a writer. Here are the actually reasons it worked out for me:

• I treated writing like a therapy practice, not a means to get followers.

• I dared to share my truth even when it got me hate.

• I stopped trying to impress and started to connect.

• I expressed what most people hide from the world.

• I kept showing up, even when no one cared.

• I read things most people wouldn’t touch.

• I journaled every emotion and thought.

• I questioned everything I believed.

• I consumed what others ignored.

• I wasn’t afraid to show my flaws.

• I showed people who I really am.

So in summary:

I was able to build a business cause I share ME with my audience. The more you can be yourself the more you’ll find the right audience.

But there’s an issue.

After talking with 100s of creators, I realized a pattern of people’s issues:

• They lived through life-altering experiences but don’t know how to express them.

• They write from their head but forget to write from the heart.

• They want connection, but they hide behind perfection.

• They’re waiting to feel “ready”, but ready never comes.

• They have deep thoughts, but the words feel clumsy.

• They want to share more but fear they’ll be judged.

• They have great ideas, but can’t get them on paper.

Simply:

They don’t know how to start. They don’t know how to get people to engage with their posts. They don’t know how get eyeballs on their writing.

And that’s where I come in.
